Sabbatarians actually believe if the 10 commandments were abolished, we could murder, steal and commit adultery!

This is a favorite argument of Adventists and one of their most deceptive ones! It is absolutely false. They give the impression that if we don't listen to Moses, there is no one to whom we can listen to for guidance in life! We listen to Jesus!

Actual Adventist argument quoted:

"The next time a preacher tells you the law is done away with, just go to his church and break the eighth commandment and steal his offering and you'll find out real quick the law is not done away with." (Seventh-day Adventist Pastor in a public revelation seminar)

Adventist Argument Refuted:

  1. When Adventists learn the Bible teaches that the 10 commandments are abolished today, their most common question is: If the Ten Commandments are abolished, we can steal and commit adultery. This statement is poorly thought out and is like suggesting that when a USA citizen travels to Canada, they are now permitted to murder because US law has no power in Canada. Obviously Canada has the same law against murder! Likewise, when the New Covenant (Law of Christ) replaced the Old Covenant (Law of Moses: the ten commandments) both contained many of the same moral laws. So just because the 10 commandments are abolished, the new Law of Christ is in force to prohibit 9 of the 10 commandments. Only the Sabbath law was not carried forward into the new covenant, being abolished forever! (Col 2:14-16) The Sabbatarian claim that if the 10 commandments are abolished, that means there is nothing to keep us from stealing, murdering and adultery is ridiculous as this chart illustrates:
  2.

    Example

    Obsolete Law

    Present Law

    Canada

    Constitution of 1867-1981

    Constitution of 1981 to present

    United States

    Confederation of 1781-1789

    Constitution of 1787 to present

John 12:48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day."

    BIBLE: John 12:48

Law Of Moses/10 Commandments From Sinai to the cross

    Law Of Christ/New Covenant

From the cross till the 2nd coming

So just because a law is obsolete and abolished does not mean we are without law! Likewise all the moral code of the Ten commandments and the rest of the Law of God in the Old Covenant is brought over and re-instated under the new Covenant Law of Christ. Based on Jn 12:48, when a Christian stands before God in judgement regarding stealing, Jesus will refer to Eph 4:28, not the Ten Commandments!
  3. Moses commanded something that no Sabbatarian obeys: Acts 3:22-24 "Moses said, 'The Lord God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed in everything He says to you. 'And it shall be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.'" Sabbatarians do not give heed to Jesus in EVERYTHING! But part heed to Moses via the 10 commandments and part to Jesus.
  4. Of the ten commandments, nine were carried forward into the New Covenant, but the Sabbath law was abolished. We can find a new testament passage for 9 of the ten commandments. But not only is the Sabbath law ever quoted in the New Testament, it is outright stated to be abolished!
